Teresa G. Meyers

ONTONAGON, MI. – Teresa G. Meyers, 86, passed away peacefully at her home in Ontonagon, Michigan on Monday, September 1, 2014 with her loving family by her side.

Teresa was born in Hancock, Michigan on April 11, 1928 to Chester and Gladys Spitz, the fourth of six children. She was raised in Hancock and graduated from E.L. Wright High School in 1946. After graduating from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Hancock, Teresa traveled to Racine, WI to begin her long and rewarding nursing career. She later moved to Marquette, MI where she met her husband, Clarence W. Meyers, while working at St. Mary’s Hospital. They were married on October 11, 1952 at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Marquette. During their early life together, they lived in Marquette, Ontonagon, and Milwaukee, WI. In 1966, they moved back to Michigan when Teresa accepted the position of Director of Nurses at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital. She worked there in that capacity, as well as assistant hospital administrator, until her retirement in 1989.

Teresa was completely devoted to her family. She attended all of her daughter’s academic, musical and sporting events with great enthusiasm and joy. Over the years, Teresa continued this support with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Teresa especially cherished big family gatherings including holiday celebrations, Sunday suppers, and summer days at her cottage in Twin Lakes.

Teresa’s numerous volunteer activities included director of funeral luncheons for the Holy Family Catholic Church, treasurer of St. Vincent De Paul Society and store, the food pantry, the St. Nicholas Project, and the Ontonagon County Cancer Society. Teresa was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and loved her years as a member of the church choir.

In 1992, after 40 years of marriage, Teresa lost the love of her life, her husband Clarence. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Gladys (Kellan) Spitz, her oldest sister Jean Barbara, brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence (Claire), John (Margaret), brother Bob, and brother-in-law (Charles Jacques).

Teresa is survived by her sister Catherine of Milwaukee, WI and sister-in-law Carol McGlynn of Marquette; four daughters, Cynthia (Tom) LeGault and Geri (John) Hawley of Ontonagon, Kathleen (Almor) Penegor of Hancock, and Christine (Gary) Merrill of Corvallis, Oregon; grandchildren, Tommy LeGault, Mike LeGault (Jenny), Terri (Matt) Pearson, Maria (Gary) Peterson, Missy LeGault, Maren (Pete) Rouleau, Ali (Chris) Pasiuk, Bill Penegor, Nate and Miranda Merrill, Kyle and Eric Hawley; great grandchildren Kaelyn and Jordyn Rouleau, Lucyann Pasiuk, Bella LeGault, Megan Allen, Matthew, and Michael Peterson, Natasha (Cody) Sayles; great, great grandchildren Annaka, Aili, and Alita Sayles; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11 AM at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 4 from 5:30 to 8 PM (Rosary at 7:30) at the Holy Family Catholic Church, as well as one hour before the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Teresa’s memory can be made to one of above listed charitable organizations.
