2 arraigned in Chippewa County abuse case
SAULT STE. MARIE – Two Chippewa County residents were arraigned Wednesday on charges related to the alleged abuse of a vulnerable adult.
Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Aug. 18 to a criminal sexual assault report, alleged to have occurred on Drummond Island.
Police said their investigation led to the arrest of James Howard Shaul, 35, and Melissa Ann Greiser, 30, both of Drummond Island.
“The victim in this case is very vulnerable and has very limited mobility making this case extremely disturbing,” said Chippewa County Undersheriff Michael Bitnar in a news release. “I do expect several more felony charges on one or both suspects upon the prosecutor’s complete review of this case.”
Shaul is charged with three felonies, including second-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree vulnerable adult abuse and kidnapping with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct.
Shaul is also being charged as a fourth-offense habitual offender. Police said he is registered on the state’s sex offender list from a prior CSC conviction.
Greiser is charged with one felony, first-degree vulnerable adult abuse.
Shaul is being held without bond in the Chippewa County Jail. Bond was set for Greiser at 10 percent of $20,000, with a tether.
A preliminary examination has been scheduled for both defendants at 1 p.m. Thursday.
