Missing swimmer a false alarm
MARQUETTE – The U.S. Coast Guard used a search helicopter called in from Traverse City as well as a small boat from the Marquette station after receiving a report of a missing swimmer along South Beach in Marquette Friday.
Executive Petty Officer Christopher Connolly said in a phone interview that the Marquette station received a report of a person in the water at approximately 11:36 a.m. Friday. Four minutes later, at 11:40 a.m., the Coast Guard boat was in the water with personnel looking for the missing person.
The Marquette Sheriff’s Office and Marquette lifeguards joined the search, which continued until approximately 12:45 p.m., according to Connolly.
At that time, a male immer – which Connolly did not identify – showed up on the shore along the search area, and reported to authorities that it was he who was being searched for. The person who reported the incident – who was also not identified – confirmed.
Marquette General emergency personnel and the Marquette Police Department assisted at the scene.
