Commissioners named to committee evaluating manager, attorney
MARQUETTE – Marquette Mayor Pro Tem Fred Stonehouse and city commissioners Mike Coyne and Sarah Reynolds have been named to a committee for the annual evaluation of City Manager Bill Vajda and City Attorney Ronald Keefe.
An annual performance review is required by the city charter. The committee will review the evaluations completed by all the commissioners and make recommendations regarding any adjustment to the city manager’s compensation and terms of employment.
The committee will still evaluate the attorney’s job performance, but it won’t adjust salary as he is on retainer and his annual compensation is set through the city budget process.
Any adjustments to that would likely be discussed during the budget meetings in the next several weeks.
Mayor Robert Niemi said at the Aug. 11 city commission meeting the committee members will review the evaluations with Vajda and Keefe to keep them apprised of the process.
Niemi also said Stonehouse served on the committee last year, and the other two commissioners will continue to serve after he, Stonehouse and Commissioner Don Ryan are off the commission so there will be continuity.
Niemi, Stonehouse and Ryan cannot run for seats in the November election because of term limits.
Commissioner Sara Cambensy said she is glad Niemi mentioned the city manager and attorney will be part of the process.
“I think we always get a better evaluation that way, so thank you for bringing that up,” Cambensy said.
Niemi reminded the commissioners the committee needs tabulated results by Aug. 29.
