Micklow, Trujillo win Marquette club championships

MARQUETTE – Sue Micklow and George Trujillo captured club championships as each won a pair of matches on Sunday at the Marquette Golf Club.

Micklow defended her title and won her record 11th Ladies Club Championship by defeating Kristen Bjorne in the afternoon.

Each made the finals by winning a morning semifinal match, Micklow over Bridget Carter and Bjorne over Karla McCutcheon.

Quarterfinals were held Saturday, when the No. 1 seeded Micklow defeated No. 8 Amy Chapin, No. 7 McCutcheon upset No. 2 Jan Hruska, No. 3 Bjorne defeated No. 6 Kris Saint Onge and No. 5 Carter defeated No. 4 Sheila Grazulis.

Micklow received the No. 1 seed as last year’s champion and the others were seeded based on medal play rounds from the previous weekend. The same formula was used to seed the Senior Club Championship tournament.

Trujillo took the Senior Club Championship as the No. 2 seed and medalist from the previous weekend’s qualifying. He defeated Mark McGovern in the championship match Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday morning, Trujillo defeated Tom Meravi and McGovern beat Jim Zorza in the semifinals.

In Saturday’s quarterfinals, No. 8 seeded Zorza upset defending champion and No. 1 Ed Grimes, No. 2 Trujillo defeated No. 7 Kim Frazier, No. 3 Meravi defeated No. 6 Mark Petry and No. 5 McGovern defeated No. 4 Mark Van Linden.
