County Road 492 work starts

MARQUETTE – The Marquette County Road Commission and Associated Constructors will be closing the southbound lane of County Road 492 at U.S. Highway 41 and M-28 starting 8 a.m. today until approximately Aug. 26 for road improvements of the intersection.

Traffic will be detoured using old County Road 492/Wright Street.

Engineer Manager Jim Iwanicki said the closed lanes are those going south into Walmart.

“We’re taking the asphalt out and putting concrete in there,” Iwanicki said. “That’s being done to take care of some of the rutting problems.

“And the asphalt wasn’t holding up to the truck traffic that was using that intersection, and we were having lots of problems with especially that right turn lane and that breaking up and pot-holing, so we’re trying to address that situation with this project.”

He said the northbound lane of County Road 492 will be down to one lane of traffic and there will be one shoulder closed on U.S. Highway 41 in front of Target.

“Minor inconvenience but it will save us a lot of headaches in the spring, especially when that area starts to pothole,” Iwanicki said.

“We had lots of complaints the last couple of springs especially in that right turn lane and we’re trying to address those complaints.”
