Airport to host Discover Sawyer event Saturday

GWINN – The purpose of Saturday’s Discover Sawyer Family Fun Day is to get people to do just that: discover Sawyer, particularly the airport.

“This will be the first annual event,” said Duane DuRay, airport manager at Sawyer International Airport, in an email. “We are hoping to bring both the local people out to the airport and we are hoping to attract visitors from out of town to fly in for the event.”

There will be free admission.

The planned events should provide something for everyone, DuRay said.

A runway bike/run is set for 7:30-9 a.m. (a $15 donation to the Marquette County Flying Club is requested, although kids 12 and under may run or bike for free). An all-you-can-eat Rotary pancake breakfast is scheduled for 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m. The price is $10, with kids age 5 and under eating for free.

A Kid Zone with giant inflatables, a Show & Shine Car Show and remote control model display will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Experimental Aviation Association’s Young Eagles registration will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with kids ages 8 to 17 eligible for free airplane rides (a parent must be present).

Also taking place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. are static aircraft and airport equipment displays as well as Sawyer business and vendor displays. Ramp food vendors will operate from noon to 3 p.m.

The entry for the car show is $10 per car for a donation to Rotary charities. There will be People’s Choice Awards and dash plaques to the first 75 registered cars. Registration can be made at www.sawyerairport.com. For more information, email bentlage@tds.net or call 343-6619.

Discount pancake tickets for $8 also can be obtained online.

“The desire is to continue to grow this into something bigger every year, drawing from our success every year,” DuRay said.
