Aurelia E. Hooper
NEGAUNEE, MI. – Aurelia E. Hooper, 98, of Oak St., Negaunee, entered eternal life at 8:35 am on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at her home with her loving family by her side and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice.
Aurelia was born June 18, 1916 in Marquette to William and Elizabeth (Knox) Swenor, spent a happy childhood in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School, Class of 1934. She earned her RN degree from St. Luke’s Hospital in 1937 and was employed as a nurse in area hospitals. Eldred Hooper entered her life and they were married on August 5, 1939, beginning their life together in Negaunee.
They began their family in 1942. Soon after, they became involved in the War effort with Eldred entering the military in 1944, but he soon returned to Negaunee where his skill as an iron miner was needed. They spent one year in Bremerton, WA where Aurelia worked as a government nurse and Eldred worked in the shipyards, returning to Marquette in 1945. In 1950, they settled in Negaunee where they spent the rest of their lives. Aurelia retired from Northern Michigan University’s Health Center as the Director of Nurses in June, 1979 after many years of service.
Following retirement, Aurelia and Eldred spent winters in Florida for a few years but decided home was where they wanted to be. She was an avid reader and loved to knit, keeping her children and grandchildren’s homes supplied with dish cloths and afghans. Aurelia loved her family, and she cared for them wisely and lovingly.
Surviving are her dear sister, Grace Jones of Port Townsend, WA; 5 children: Cynthia (John) Hust of AuTrain, Linda Hooper of Grass Valley, CA, Janice (John) Riessbeck of Newport, OR, Christine (Mark) Shauer of Battle Creek, and Tim (Mary) Hooper of Ishpeming; her beauty and dignity will be very much missed by not only her children but also her 10 grandchildren: Shelly (Dana) Pinkerton, Will (Bronwyn) Arcand, Jessica (Adam) Miller, Aurora Hill, Sean Riessbeck, Heather (Paul) Prusi-Wilson, Holly (Christopher) Bridges, Nicholas Brownell, Thaeddus (Leisa) Hust and Caitlin (Jesse Green) Hust; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 67 years, Eldred Hooper; an infant daughter; her son John at the age of 4; 5 brothers: Charles, William, Thomas, John and James Swenor; and a sister, Rita Ellsworth.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, August 7 at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas Mater officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 pm until the time of services at 4:00 pm at the church on Thursday, and also at a dinner reception in the church hall following the service.
