Legion Blues ousted
GLADWIN – A 6-5 loss to Petoskey Friday eliminated the Marquette American Legion Blues from further competition in the Class A state baseball tournament in Gladwin.
The Blues, who dropped a 1-0 decision to Hudson Thursday to open the double-elimination tourney, saw Petoskey score the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Marquette club trailed 3-0 in the fifth, but scored four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead.
Petoskey notched two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, while the Blues of manager Derek Swajanen could only manage a single run in the sixth.
McKinley Larson pitched four innings and Ryan Walther three for the Blues, the former striking out four and the latter fanning five.
Sam Leow drove in two runs for Marquette.
In other action, Gladstone beat Gladwin 7-0 to advance to semifinal play today. In addition, Escanaba won twice – 6-1 over Hudson and 10-6 over Petoskey, to make the loser’s bracket final.
