19-year-old dies in 2 vehicle crash

ISHPEMING – A 19-year-old Ishpeming Township woman died as the result of a two-vehicle traffic accident Friday morning on US 41 in Ishpeming.

Killed was Samantha Lee Bonovich of U.S. 41 West in Ishpeming Township, according to the Ishpeming City Police Department.

The accident involved Bonovich’s passenger vehicle colliding with a dump truck, police said.

The accident occurred when Bonovich was attempted to turn west onto U.S. 41 from the Family Dollar parking lot, pulling out between two National Guard trucks that had stopped in the outside lane for a red light, police said.

She attempted to drive into the westbound lanes when her 1999 Subaru was struck by a 2004 Freightliner dump truck that was traveling east on U.S. 41 in the passing lane.

The driver of the truck, Jeffrey Alan Johnson, 46, of Marquette, was injured in the accident and was treated and released at Bell Hospital.

Police said preliminary findings point to the driver of the Subaru being at fault in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Ishpeming police were assisted at the scene by the Ishpeming Township Police Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division of Iron Mountain, Marquette County Rescue Unit 131 and the Ishpeming City Fire Department.
