MARQUETTE, MI. – Nelson Shellenbarger, 75, passed away July 23, 2014, in Marquette. Nelson was born September 10, 1938 in West Branch, MI to Jess and Elvira Shellenbarger.
Nelson is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jacquey; three children, Barry Shellenbarger of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Jennifer Gostomski of Marquette and Suzanne Wilkowski of Fenton, MI; two brothers, Perry and Arnold of Hale, MI; and ten grandchildren, Tanner, Jessica, Tyler, Hannah, Katelyn, Noah, Gage, Isabelle, Ashley and Ben.
The youngest of eight children, Nelson would go fishing before school to catch fish for dinner, for his ma. Growing up on his family’s farm, Nelson spent much time milking cows, haying, playing basketball in the barn, and sneaking down to Londo Lake to go swimming alone, which was not permitted!
Nelson graduated from Hale Area High School, attended Alpena Community College, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern Michigan University. While attending NMU, he played basketball for Stan Albeck. He retired from Hale High School, after teaching 30 years and coaching various sports. He enjoyed music, trapping, gardening, hunting, and fishing. Nelson lived in Marquette for the past 10 years before entering Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee in January of 2014.
Nelson will be dearly missed and held in deep and loving remembrance by his family.

A celebration of Nelson’s life will be held at the American Legion Hall in Hale, MI on August 23, 2014 from 12 Noon to 3 p.m. The service will begin at 12:30 with a meal and fellowship to follow.
