Rave Run coming up

ISHPEMING – The Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to bring you this summer’s newest race: The Northern Lights Rave Run 5K and Kids’ 1K. The Chamber staff and Rave Run Event Committee have been working hard and planning this event since January. Even though I have written about the Rave Run previously, I’d like to share some more information about it:

When: Aug. 23, 2014

Where: Al Quaal Recreation Area, Ishpeming.

6 p.m. – Picnic Festival: games, obstacle course, day-of registration

8 p.m. – Kids’ Race begins

9 p.m. – 5K begins

The Rave Run is an evening, glow-in-the-dark run that will light up the night and be fun for the whole family. We want to see everyone get creative: paint yourself with glow paint, deck out a costume in glow-sticks, wear crazy neon socks – whatever you can think of. This event may have the word “run” in it, but we want to emphasize that people are welcome to walk the course, too.

The Rave Run is taking the place of the Mud Plunge. While we realize this may be disappointing, don’t worry – elements of the Mud Plunge will still be there. Obstacles like the quarter pipe, climbing wall, and tires from the Mud Plunge will all be re-purposed into a rave-worthy obstacle course, sponsored by the Marquette County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Make it through the obstacle course and you’ll be entered to win a Tablet. Speaking of winning, you’ll have a chance to win some other prizes, too, including glow-swag to use in the race, by playing some fun games. Both the MCCVB Obstacle Course and the games will be taking place during the Picnic Festival.

The Kids’ Race will include some fun, kid-friendly obstacles as well. Parents, grandparents, and other relatives are welcome to watch the kids conquer the course and cheer them on. Small children may be accompanied by an adult, if necessary. The adult will not be charged a fee to help the child.

At dusk, the 5K will take off. There are two divisions for the 5K: the Competitive Run and the Lake Effect Entertainment Fun Run. Competitive runners will go first, and the fun runners will begin shortly afterwards. Runners will be released in waves to avoid congestion on the race course.

If you don’t want to run as an individual, good news: each race has a team option, so get your friends, family, or co-workers together. We also expanded team sizes this year to include 4, 5, or 6 people.

Once racers have completed the glowing forest course, they won’t just cross a finish line; they’ll run into a tent filled with dance music and a light show, provided by Lake Effect Entertainment.
