9 injured in 4-vehicle crash

SANDS – Nine people, including several children, were injured in a 4-vehicle crash that took place at about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on M-553, at the intersection with Flodin Road in Sands Township.

According to a written statement from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, which is overseeing the investigation, all four vehicles involved were pickup trucks. Two of the trucks were stopped at the southbound left lane of M-553, attempting to make a left turn on to Flodin Road. A third pickup, approaching from the rear, failed to stop, striking one of the pickups, which, in turn, struck the truck in front of it, police said.

The second truck attempting to turn left was forced into the northbound lane of M-553, striking a northbound pickup that was pulling a trailer of scrap metal.

All nine persons involved were transported by ambulance to Marquette General Hospital. Four of the nine were children ranging in ages from four to 11 years. All sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to police. Their specific conditions were unknown late Wednesday.

The driver who caused the crash, who has not been identified, was cited for careless driving and operating a motor vehicle without insurance. M-553 was closed for about one hour. The investigation continues.

A complete story on this crash will appear in Thursday’s Mining Journal.
