Baraga design meeting Thursday

MARQUETTE – A presentation for final design recommendations for Baraga Avenue will be held by the design team from the Michigan State University Urban and Regional Planning Program from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Commons, 112 S. Third St. The community is invited. Guests are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch; complimentary beverages and dessert will be served.

The Marquette Downtown Development Authority received a MIplace Plan initiative grant for redesign assistance for Baraga Avenue. The MIplace Plan team is a collaboration between the Michigan Municipal League, the MSU Urban and Regional Planning Program and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The project parameters are Baraga Avenue from Third Street to Lakeshore Boulevard and address development and redevelopment opportunities, traffic, transportation, walkability and access to adjacent neighborhoods.

The final design presentation is an accumulation of input from stakeholders that included: community members, business owners, building owners and public officials. While in Marquette in March, the consulting team conducted a visioning session with the community to identify opportunities, gather input to guide the process and help direct the future development of Baraga Avenue.

The second phase, held on in April, involved a series of workshops, known as charrettes, designed to solicit feedback on the preliminary design ideas conceptualized from the visioning session.
