AUTRAIN – About 2,000 spectators flocked to AuTrain July 14 to see who would emerge the winner in the 10th annual AuTrain Canoe Race. The route took participants from the starting point at the National Forest Campground on AuTrain Lake to the AuTrain River Bridge on M-28. Besides the opportunity to see top canoe racers in action and enjoy the beauty of the area, participants also got to hear bluegrass and country music and partake in a barbecue. The day was dampened by a little rain, but spirits remained high anyway.

ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming City Council has asked local physicians and dentists to spread their views opposing the anti-flouridation ordinance, that will be on the election ballot, among their patients. The ordinance, which stands as the key issue in the upcoming city election, was presented by petition July 7, at which time the council voted unanimously to put the measure to a vote of the people.
