Historical Society holds annual home tour
NEGAUNEE – The Negaunee Historical Society and Museum will hold its Annual Home Tour event and fundraiser on Friday July 11, featuring three historic homes in the city’s downtown and one new home in Teal Lake Estates on the edge of the lake.
Having hosted the event for more than 20 years, the fundraiser helps support the nonprofit historical society and defray some of its costs, but “it’s also to put our name out there, put the historical museum out there so people see that,” said Suzanne Morris, the society’s vice president. “It’s a wonderful, wonderful resource (and) of course a reminder of days gone by. Our museum is just a treasure.”
The tour will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $8 the day of the event, at the historical society and museum at 303 E. Main Street or any of the four homes on the tour, and the museum will also serve refreshments.
This year’s featured homes are a three-bedroom house at 205 E. Peck Street, whose current owners are only the residence’s second inhabitants since it was built in 1918 – a fact that Morris said is pretty special; an early 20th century home at 201 E. Main Street, built for a manager at what was then Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which has been extensively remodeled and whose lot has been beautifully landscaped; a five-bedroom home at 133 E. Lincoln Street, built as a boarding house in 1900, with original and restored woodwork and a full attic and basement; and an 8-year-old house in the Teal Lake Estates neighborhood which, though not historic, Morris said is of a type the historical society will often include on the tour to showcase for being exceptionally beautiful as well as to sate curious community members.
“We’ve put new houses on before, just to get people a flavor of other houses that are in the area,” she said. “A lot of people go on these tours not only for the historic aspect of it, but to see how people decorate, to see how they lay out their homes, to get some ideas for themselves and to just see what a house up on Teal Lake Estates … is like.”
Morris is also always looking for potential homes, apartment buildings or businesses to include on future tours. For more information, contact her at 869-6039.
