UPFA United U-16 boys win Petoskey Invitational
MARQUETTE – The Upper Peninsula Football Association United Under-16 boys team beame the first U.P. team to win their division’s championship at the Petoskey Invitational tournament held June 13-15.
The UPFA boys, who also won last year’s Superior Dome tournament and appeared in the finals of the Schwan’s USA Cup, clinched the Petoskey title with a 5-2 victory over the host Lakers in the finals. James Bruce and Calvin Pinar each scored twice and Adam Skendzel the other goal for UPFA.
The U.P. team reached the finals by shutting out the Fruitport Fire, 3-0, on goals by Bruce, Pinar and Adam Skendzel, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Civics, 2-0, on tallies by Skendzel and Jacob Darner.
That was enough to advance as UPFA also lost to 3-2 to the Midland North Storm in their final group game despite goals by Skendzel and Pinar.
“I’m delighted with both the quality and intensity of our play,” UPFA coach Norman Power said. “Having players from all over the U.P. combine together gives me great pride and we are hoping to develop something special forming UPFA United teams across the board.”
U13 girls make final
Also at the Petoskey Invitational from June 13-15, the Marquette Soccer Academy U13 girls made their third straight championship apperance at a tournament, finishing as runners-up despite winning all three of their group games before falling 2-1 in the title game on a goal by Emily Paupore.
Before that, the MSA team defeated the Petoskey Lakers 2-1 with two goals by Paupore, the Thornapple Area Soccer Club 1-0 on a goal by Lauren Kurzawa, and the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Civics 2-0 on kicks into the net by Paupore and Rachel Ely.
“To see desire as well as quality in our performances was a massive positive,” MSA coach Jack Curtin said. “Moving forward, I’m excited abut the potential of this group of players.”
