Irene H. Wagar

MARQUETTE, MI. – Irene H. Wagar, 81, a lifelong resident of Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Marquette General Hospital, in the loving care of her family.

Born in Marquette on February 14, 1933 to John and Jennie (Scholtus) Lahti, Irene was raised in Marquette, and graduated from Graveraet High School. Following graduation, she went to work for Michigan Bell where she held several positions over her 25 year career. She was married to Chuck Wagar in 1965, and together the couple raised two daughters. A longtime member of the Marquette Gospel Tabernacle, Irene was active with the church in many capacities. She was currently a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette and was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Irene belonged to an exercise group at the Marquette Senior Center, attending three days a week for many years. An avid shopper, she also loved to entertain family and friends. Irene suffered with arthritis for most of her life and endured lots of pain but never complained, and her selflessness was an inspiration to many. She had many dear friends, including her faithful feline companion, Rusty. Irene was a wonderful mother who loved and cherished her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Laurel (Anthony) Fetterhoff of Marquette and Pauline (Kenneth) Suhs of Florida; a sister, Jeanette Bicigo of Marquette; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Wagar in 2006; and a sister, Lillian Duer.

Visitation for Irene will be held at the Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday, July 5, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of services at 11:00 am. Pastor Hank Steede will officiate.
