New U.P. Propane opening at K.I.

K.I. SAWYER – U.P. Propane of Dickinson County is expanding its operations with a new outlet set to open soon at K.I. Sawyer.

Owner Dan Harrington said the new location at 1195 M-94 (corner of M-94 and 5th Street) will help the business expand eastward.

“We’ve always serviced southern Marquette County out of Dickinson County, but now we’re getting a little more of eastern Marquette County and Alger County,” Harrington said.

In 2006, Harrington and his wife, Cindy, bought the Iron Mountain Gas Co. and changed its name to U.P. Propane.

“We’re a full service propane company,” Harrington said.

In 2008, the Harringtons purchased Superior Gas, which is located in the Humboldt-Champion area of western Marquette County. That move widened the area covered by the company in much the same way the K.I. Sawyer outlet is expected to broaden service to the east.

After two years securing permits for the development, Harrington began construction on the four-acre site about three weeks ago. Features being built include an office building, truck garage, loading dock and fill station. Two 30,000-gallon storage tanks will also be situated on the site.

Harrington said construction is expected to be completed by early fall, with the office building to be completed and opened within a month or so.
