Pair located safe in Porcupine Mountains
SILVER CITY – A Michigan State Police K-9 unit from the Calumet post located a 37-year-old mother and her 11-year-old son Wednesday who had been missing at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park overnight.
The two Rothschild, Wis. residents, whose names police did not release, were found in good spirits and were reunited with family members.
Police said troopers from the Wakefield post were dispatched to the Lake of the Clouds viewing area at about 8:30 p.m. CST Tuesday. The woman and her son had become separated from other family members, while attempting to take another route back to the viewing area.
At 2 a.m. Wednesday, the search was suspended because of poor lighting conditions and low visibility. The search resumed at 6 a.m. and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter joined the search at 8:20 a.m. About 10 minutes later, the woman and her son were found by the K-9 unit along the Carp River Trail, about a half mile from where they were last seen.
