MARQUETTE – A consent decree reached Friday between the state and federal government means the Marquette State Prison is in line for some improvements. The government filed suit against the state following riots at the Marquette, Ionia and Jackson prisons during the Memorial Day 1981 weekend. The suit involved conditions for about 7,400 prisoners.

ANN ARBOR – Several members of the top-ranked Marquette Senior High School debate team are attending the University of Michigan Summer Debate Institute. Debbie Kuhn, Jennifer Mazzuchi and Kris Strommel are attending a two-week session with Martha Easton and Mike Mazzuchi participating in the three-week session. The program is designed to instruct students in the areas of debate theory, analysis and argumentation.

MARQUETTE – The “clear issue” of the coming political campaign is that “the Democratic party is the party of prosperity and the Republican party is the party of recession,” ex-Senator Blair Moody of Detroit told an audience at the Clifton Hotel here last night. Lashing out at the Republican economic program, the Democratic candidate for the U. S. Senate said, “the current recession was manufactured by Republican blunders in Washington.”

ISHPEMING – The term three dimensional aquatics described the Skiing L’s as the Lindwall family is more familiarly known to the entertainment world. This fabulous family of professional water skiers will appear in Ishpeming on July 27 during the celebration of the city’s 100th anniversary, July 25-31. Three generations of Lindwalls, “Swede” Grandpa, aged 70, son Bob, age 46, and grandchildren, Jo, Robert Jr., and Larry, 9 to 14, make up this sensational water skiing quintet.
