Elna K. Hill

MARQUETTE, MI – Elna K. Hill, age 98, of Marquette, entered eternal life on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, in the loving and comforting care of her family, the staff of Brookridge Heights, and U.P. Home Health and Hospice. Elna was born on February 15, 1916 in Negaunee, Michigan to John and Johanna (Erickson) Peterson. She was the youngest of 10 siblings. In 1937, Elna married Richard O. Hill and together they had three daughters: Katherine, Lois, and Sandra. Richard was tragically killed at a very young age as the result of a mining accident and Elna was left to raise their three young children.

She was a kind, gentle and soft spoken individual who was always able to find the good in everyone. Elna had a firm faith in God and believed strongly in the power of prayer. Her family was very important to her and she always had good advice and a “home remedy” for any situation. Elna was a very strong willed and independent woman, enabling her to live on her own until the age of 96 before leaving Snowberry Heights and moving to Brookridge. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardens, a glass of red wine, visits with family and friends, and spending time at the cabin in Gwinn enjoying the peacefulness of the lake from her favorite chair. Elna amazed us with her keen wit and humor, and ultimately with her ability to always remain optimistic.

Elna is survived by her loving daughter and caregiver, Lois J. Ritari of Marquette; grandchildren: Feride (Ismet) Kalafatoglu of Turkey, Rana (Cem) Oneren of Turkey, Richard (Cathy) Ritari of Iowa, Ron (Tama) Ritari, Jr. of Harvey, Julie (John) Baltes of Wisconsin, Gerald (Donna) Mackey of Florida, and Michelle Mackey of Florida; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren. She is further survived by son-in-laws Vahit O’nat of Turkey, Jerry Mackey of Harvey; granddaughter-in-law Ronda Mackey of Skandia; several nieces, nephews and relatives.

In addition to her parents and husband, Elna was preceded in death by daughters Katherine A. O’nat and Sandra P. Mackey; son-in-law, Ronald D. Ritari, Sr.; a grandson, Dan Mackey; and her six sisters and three brothers.

Elna’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren would like to give a special thanks to her daughter Lois for the devotion and compassion she has shown for caring for her mother, our grandmother. The family would also like to give a special thanks to the staff at Brookridge Heights, as well as the caregivers with U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Visitation will be held for Elna at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Sunday, June 22, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home beginning at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Leon Jarvis will preside. Interment will take place at Park Cemetery on Monday morning, June 23 at 9:00 a.m.
