Carolyn ‘Jeannie’ Kangas

NEGAUNEE, MI – Carolyn ‘Jeannie’ Kangas, 67, of 636 Everett St., Negaunee, died peacefully surrounded by her family early Wednesday morning, June 18, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital following a short illness.

Jeannie was born April 29, 1947 in Dover-Fox- croft, Maine to Elwin and Helen (Grant) Smart and graduated from Dover- Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1965. She then attended the University of Maine’s Gorham Campus.

Jeannie married Dale P. Kangas on August 7, 1978 and they lived in various locations during Dale’s career in the Air Force, finally settling in Negaunee in 1984. She was employed at Buck’s Party Store in Negaunee for 26 years.

Jeannie was a very active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, where she was a past Madam President of the Negaunee Eagle’s Auxiliary.

She was also a very active life member of the Negaunee VFW Auxiliary, and was a former member of the Negaunee Booster Club. She was very generous when it came to donating her time and helping others. In her free time, she enjoyed crafting and crocheting, and was well known for making slippers and scrubbies.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Dale P. Kangas; her son, William (Shanda) Bickford of Clinton, TN; her daughter, Tracey Kangas of Negaunee; 3 grandchildren: Sara and Caleb Hammar and David Bickford; 2 brothers: Elwin ‘Buddy’ (Bonnie) Smart, Jr. of Hartland, ME and William (Julia) Smart of Voohreesville, NY; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 21st at Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until 10:45 am at the funeral home on Saturday, at which time the Negaunee Eagles will conduct services.

A reception will immediately follow memorial services at the Negaunee Eagles Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Negaunee Eagles Club, 309 Iron St., Negaunee, MI 49866 in Jeannie’s memory.
