Hannahville hosting pow wow

HARRIS – The 38th annual Great Lakes Area Traditional Pow Wow hosted by the Hannahville Indian Community is set for Friday through Sunday at the Woodland Gathering Ground, directly behind the Island Resort and Casino Sweetgrass Golf Course along Hannahville B-1 Road.

The public is welcome. The entrance fee is $5 and is good for the entire weekend. Those 55 and older or 5 and under are admitted free.

Native Americans refer to a pow wow as a gathering to celebrate life. It is a time to visit, feast, sing and dance together. Pow wows are not necessarily a performance for an organized audience but are a time of sharing, reinforcing and expressing Native American heritage. The public is always welcome.

The first dance of each session is the Grand Entry at which time all the dancers are within the arena at the same time. Singing and dancing will continue for hours following the Grand Entry.

Grand Entry times are: 7 p.m. Friday; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday; and noon Sunday.

Throughout the weekend, spectators will have the opportunity to learn about Great Lakes Area Native American culture. In addition to singing and dancing, there also will be food and craft vendors set up.
