ISHPEMING, MI – Helen N. Romeli, age 92 of 830 E. Empire St. Ishpeming passed away Saturday June 14, 2014 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she been a resident since 2012.
Helen was born January 29, 192 in Negaunee to the late Frank and Hilja (Helmila) Niemi. She was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, class of 1939 and of the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. Helen served in the United States Army in the field of nursing at Mayo General in Illinois and at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. where she attained the rank of Captain. She worked locally as a Registered Nurse at both the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming and St. Luke’s Hospital in Marquette.
Helen was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and its quilters group, St. Luke’s Alumni, Wawonowin Country Club, Ishpeming Historical Society, Friends of the Carnegie Library, Bell Memorial Ladies Auxiliary, National Ski Hall of Fame, Paisano Club, and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority as well as a charter member of the Women’s Memorial in Washington D.C.
Helen is survived 2 cousins: Wallace (Marilyn) Helmila of Republic and Carol (Jim) Crothers of Lincoln Park, MI and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Mosimo Romeli in 2002, a brother Leslie Niemi and sisters Lillian Balestrin, Marie (Arthur) Wassberg and step mother Mary Niemi.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday June 17, 2014 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Interment will take place at the Park Cemetery in Marquette.
Friends may call at the Bethel Lutheran Church an hour prior to the services on Tuesday.
