AURORA, IL. – Lee Edward Goewey, age 79, of Aurora, Illinois and formerly of Grand Marais, Michigan, died Sunday, June 15, 2014, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on September 22, 1934, son of George and Ellen (Pray) Goewey. Lee grew up in the Chicagoland area including Homewood, and then graduated from East Aurora High School. He joined the United States Navy through the NAV CAD program and there served our country for twenty-eight years, rising to the rank of Commander. He piloted a number of different aircrafts and served two tours in Vietnam. His favorite job was when his missions brought him to service the international science efforts in Antarctica. Lee also enjoyed his time as the Skipper of the VT-7 Training Command in Meridian, Mississippi.
He married Betty Lynn Logan on September 1, 1956 and together they raised their three children. After retirement Lee and Betty moved to Grand Marais and made it home for thirty-two years. They were members of the Grand Marais Mennonite Church. Lee loved to help people. He served as a volunteer ambulance driver with the Grand Marais Ambulance Corps, a car mechanic, and an advocate for women, children, and the elderly. He found great joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren, and was grateful for the opportunities he had to spend with them.
