30 years ago

MARQUETTE – The addition of three persons to its staff has been announced by Sundberg, Carlson & Associates, Inc., a Marquette multi-disciplined firm which provides services in architecture, engineering, surveying, construction management and planning. The new employees are Raymond Roberts, James Sundberg and Steven Boettcher.

PALMER – Lee Riekki of Palmer was awarded the Early Bach Medal by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, American College of Musicians. The group is headquartered in Texas. This is the first such medal to be awarded in the Upper Peninsula since the guild first held auditions more than 30 years ago. To win the award, Riekki was required to play 15 memorized pieces by J. S. Bach for the guild judge. A sophomore at Negaunee High School, Riekki has studied piano with Robert Buchkoe for three years.

60 years ago

MARQUETTE – About 60 carrier boys for the Mining Journal were guests last night of the W. G. Wade Carnival & Shows, appearing in Negaunee Township this week. Boys were taken on all company-owned rides, in a side show and motor drome. Arrangements for the program were made by Jack Guiney, circulation manager for the Mining Journal, with carnival officials.

ISHPEMING – Old timers of this community will be honored during the many activities planned during the Centennial, July 25-31, it was announced at headquarters today. Prominent among the events will be the Pioneer and Homecoming picnic and a presentation during the prelude of the gigantic Centurama.
