John E. Ghiardi

GWINN, MI. – John E. ‘Jack’ Ghiardi, 77, of 190 N. Serenity Dr., Gwinn, died peacefully at home Sunday evening, June 8, 2014 with his loving family by his side and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Jack was born April 16, 1937 in Ishpeming to John B. and Doris (LaFave) Ghiardi and graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1955. He attended Northern Michigan University where he was a member of the basketball team. Jack married JoAnn Mayo at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga on September 2, 1961.

Mr. Ghiardi was employed as a foreman for S.S. Groves Construction Co. for several years. He worked throughout the U.P., Ohio and also worked on the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Jack owned and operated Jack’s Hideaway in Gwinn for 21 years before becoming a partner in Superior Auto Glass in Marquette for 15 years.

Jack was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Gwinn. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and hunting. One of his greatest joys was spending time at his hunting camp in Watson.

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, JoAnn Ghiardi; son, Steven Ghiardi of Gwinn; daughter, Jodi (Jeremy) Smith and grandson, Tyler Smith, of Marquette; brothers-in-law: Bill Mayo of Marquette and John (Doris) Mayo of L’Anse; sisters-in-law: Karen, Dorothy and Barb Mayo of Baraga, Doloris Mayo of Marquette and Marlene DamGuaard of Florida; several nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and “our little loved one,” Lena Pleaugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark Ghiardi; and an infant brother, Anthony Ghiardi.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 pm on Friday, June 13th at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Allen Mott officiating. Burial will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim and Martin Ghiardi, Paul St. Andre, Dick Ontto, Don Hutchens, Neil Armatti, Bob LaFave and Tom Kevern. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 pm until the time of Mass at 4:00 pm in the Baraga Room at the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Anthony Catholic Church’s Memorial Fund or U.P. Home Health and Hospice in Jack’s memory.
