Steven R. Leverton
ISHPEMING, MI. – Steven R. Leverton, age 57 former Ishpeming resident and recent Lake Forest, IL resident passed away Saturday June 7, 2014 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Steven was born in Ishpeming on September 24, 1956 to Raymond and the late Betty Jean (Lundstrom) Leverton. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1974 and received a bachelor degree in Business Administration from Northern Michigan University.
Steven was a Certified Public Accountant, and worked for the Meridian Group International for twenty-five years, most recently as Vice-President for Finance. Professionally, Steven was a member of the Illinois CPA Association and the AICPA. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Ishpeming.
Steve’s life, though shortened by illnesses, was very full. His position took him to places in this country as well as Europe and Australia, where he made wonderful friends and won respect for his work.
He took advantage of these assignments to travel extensively and brought back many stories of his adventures. Steve was always good company and welcome wherever he went. His loyalty and thoughtfulness to family and friends bring fond memories to all who knew him.
The last five years’ battle with devastating health problems showed Steve’s true colors. He never complained and often compared his life favorably to others he felt were less fortunate. He spent many months in each of five rehabilitation hospitals working to regain his health and became familiar with many patients’ histories. He expressed great sympathy for young people whose lives were interrupted by accidents or illness, and who would never have the opportunities he had enjoyed.
Though disabled, his thoughts were often of others, especially his family, to whom he made many kind gestures. His last communication to his family, printed with difficulty on a blank sheet of paper held in front of him was a simple, eloquent “THANKS.”
Steven is survived by his father Raymond Leverton of Ishpeming, a brother David (Meta) Leverton of Ishpeming, a sister Karen (Philip) Nardi of Bellbrook, OH, nephews Matthew Leverton, John Leverton, and Eric (Megan) Nardi, a niece Heather (Ben) Phillips, 2 great nieces, 2 great nephews, an aunt Rosemary McCasland of Waukegan, IL along with several cousins.
Steven was preceded in death by his mother Betty Jean Leverton in March of last year.
The family would like to express thanks to the many caregivers who crossed paths with Steve during his illnesses and rehabilitation, in particular those at Clearview Rehabilitation Hospital in Juneau, Wisconsin and the staff of the 100 wing of the Marquette County Medical Care Center. The care Steve received during his last days at MCMCF, and the many kindnesses shown to the family attest not only to high professional standards but to a culture of love and compassion.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday June 12, 2014 at the Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Warren Geier officiating.
Steve’s family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday June 12 from 9:00am until the time of service at 11:00am.
