Purchase completes township hall and community center

MARQUETTE – The Charter Township of Marquette has approved the purchase of a 1.4-acre parcel north and contiguous to the Marquette Township Hall and Community Center at 1000 Commerce Drive to be used for expanded parking space.

“It marks the completion of the town hall project,” township Manager Randy Girard said. “We’re expanding the parking lot to include another 30 parking spaces.”

The property is being purchased from Cornerstone Development Corp. for $200,000, and construction by Oberstar Inc. has already begun.

The project was approved two board meetings ago, on May 6, Girard said, with the financing and purchase finally approved Tuesday.

“The blacktop will be done this coming week. It should be striped and usable within the next two weeks,” Girard said.

This finishes the second phase of Marquette Township’s three-part town hall project, which is designed to meet the needs of the township community for the next 25 years and has been accomplished without increased taxation.

The first phase was completion of the fire hall last summer. Occupancy of the town hall/community center and fire hall began in September 2013. The third and final phase will be to finish the Marquette Township Public Works facility at 850 W. Baraga Ave., which is due to be completed June 17. That facility’s occupancy is in progress.
