Redmen fall in district semifinals

TRAVERSE CITY – The Marquette Senior High School baseball team was held to one run on three hits Saturday in a 7-1 loss to Traverse City Central in an MHSAA Division 1 district semifinal on Saturday in Traverse City.

Junior Luke McAuliffe scored the Redmen’s lone run in the fifth and was one of three to finish with a single hit. Seniors Brad Brow and Jacob Olson had the other hits.

Sophomore Jay Oberg took the loss for Marquette after getting the postseason start. He gave up six runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts before being relieved in the fifth by freshman Garrett Finkbeiner.

“Too many mistakes on defense cost us,” MSHS manager Todd Koski said. “We hit the ball hard all day, but right at the defense. Jay and Garrett did a great job for us today. I’m saddened it ended this way, but proud of the fact we kept battling until the game ended.”
