Redettes lose in district final

TRAVERSE CITY – The Marquette Senior High School softball team faced a foe Saturday it had yet to encounter this season – heat.

Playing in 90 degree temperatures in Traverse City, the Redettes topped TC Central, 8-7, in an MHSAA Division 1 district semifinal before falling to Alpena, 11-3, in the district championship game.

“I thought we played really well today,” MSHS manager Paul Seibert said. “It was 90 degrees today and we’re just not used to that.”

Senja Liimatta pitched just over 11 innings Saturday. She finished with nine strikeouts and three walks while giving up four hits and four runs in the opener. In Game 2, Alpena scored eight runs on seven hits against Liimatta, who struck out four batters and walked four.

Junior Amanda Gray led the MSHS bats Saturday, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored in the semifinal. In the final, she went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
