Television can be one of my guilty pleasures
I don’t watch TV very much anymore. I usually have it on for background noise and when I do watch it, I watch it for my favorite shows. Though I don’t watch it often, when I do I notice a lot of commercials for reality shows, and a fair amount of them seem a little ridiculous.
I was watching a movie on CMT this past week and during every commercial break there was a promotion for a reality show called “Party Down South.” From what I could tell by the commercial it just seemed liked a southern version of “Jersey Shore,” which made sense once I saw it was created by the creators of the “Jersey Shore.” I don’t get reality shows like that and why people watch them.
I’m sure everybody has their own guilty pleasure when it comes to reality shows. I myself currently watch two different shows every summer, those are “Hell’s Kitchen” with Gordon Ramsay and “So You Think You Can Dance.” Now I will admit that “Hell’s Kitchen” is a little crazy because it can be a little dramatic a lot of the time, but “So You Think You Can Dance” is different.
I love that it’s different every year but the same. There are different dancers every year that I can fall in love with and different dances from choreographers I already love. I have always loved dance, which is what got me hooked on the show. The other thing that got me hooked was the emotion the dances have made me feel. I’ve laughed and cried. There are even dances I’ve watched so many times I can’t even count.
One of those dances was a hip-hop routine choreographed by Napoleon and Tabitha, also known as NappyTabs, to the song “Otta Your Mind” for Alex Wong and Stephen ‘Twitch’ Boss. That routine still gives me goosebumps to this day. Alex is a professional ballet dancer, and him doing hip-hop with one of the greatest hip-hop dancers of my time was just extremely crazy because Alex was amazing and held his own next to Twitch.
Like every contest reality show, the winner of “So You Think You Can Dance” does get a cash prize, but a lot of the dancers on the show that don’t win but are amazing dancers can get an amazing career out of it. Twitch was never crowned the winner of “So You Think You Can Dance,” but he has made a career for himself. Most people might recognize him as Jason from the “Step Up” movies and now he’s considered one of the best in the business.
I know reality shows are the thing now a days, but there are some reality shows that I just can’t get behind and I just don’t understand why people like them. I think reality shows like “Party Down South,” “Keeping up with the Kardashians” and any of the “Real Housewives” shows are ridiculous and I just don’t understand what people see in them, but I know everybody has their guilty pleasures when it comes to TV shows and I can understand that.
