James Ernest (Meatball) Henson

ISHPEMING, MI. – James Ernest (Meatball) Henson , 63 of Ishpeming passed away peacefully at his home on April 30, 2014.

Jim was born September 12, 1950 in Lansing to Ernest and Lorraine Henson. As an infant, they returned to the U.P. and his adventure began.

As a young boy his favorite place was his grandparent’s farm on Cliff Drive and the backwoods of North Lake with his many friends. He often talked about the train he took with his Grandma and Grandpa Saari to Seattle. He loved the U.P., it was his favorite stomping grounds, whether fishing, hunting, float tubing, snowmobiling, or snowshoeing or just enjoying the outdoors. Meatball made friends wherever he went. He always greeted you with a friendly hello and was loved for his laid back attitude. He loved camping. There were many happy times spent camping with Evelyn and Kristen, in the woods and on small islands. His ingenuity enabled him to make a camp site out just about anything he could find, from lean to’s to tents. The party barge was great fun at the Hodag Country Music Festival that he and Evelyn attended for 19 years. He was later joined by special sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Scott.

He began working in his teens at the Holiday Inn as a cook. Moving on to the Ramada Inn, ACR, Wawonowin, Golf Club. Wommers as a small engine repairman, Pellestar, A& L, and Superior Lawn Care. He was a natural born wheeler and dealer, trading and bartering for anything he could repair or resell.

He is survived by the love of his life, Evelyn Maki and their daughter Kristen Henson, Evelyn’s mother, Edith Maki. His brothers and sisters, Susan and Bill Wooden, Glen and Ginger Henson, Jeanne and Scott Harsila, Kenneth and Patricia Henson, Dennis and Tina Henson, Donald and Julie Nyman, Brandon and Christina Anderson, a special sister-in-law, Diane Maki along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also his many coffee clutching friends and his cat Bud.

He joined those who passed before him, his mother Lorraine Anderson, his father Ernest Henson, Robert Maki, Carol Keni, his brother Keith Henson, sister, Tanya Anderson, niece Katrina Madsen, and nephew Donald R. Nyman. Also his dog Grover.

We invite all that knew and loved him to celebrate his life here on earth for a Potluck Memorial Picnic on Thursday June 5, 2014 from 4-6pm at the American Legion in Greenwood.
