Barbara Joan (Durham) Jarrell

ISHPEMING, MI. – Barbara Joan (Durham) Jarrell 65, of Ishpeming, Michigan, passed away on May 17, 2014 after losing a valiant 4 year battle with melanoma at the U of M hospital in Ann Arbor, MI.

Barbara was born in Detroit on April 17, 1949 to her parents Mary Eileen (Bowen) Durham and James C. Durham. She was laid to rest on 05/21/14 at Michigan Memorial Cemetery, Flat Rock, MI.

Barbara graduated from Lincoln Park High School in 1967. In 1971, Barbara welcomed her daughter Mary Eileen Durham, named for her maternal grandmother. Barbara started her career with the State of Michigan in 1974. Barbara was dedicated and hardworking and was rewarded by becoming an Eligibility Specialist for DHS.

It was during her time working for Michigan Social Services that she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Leonard (Lenny) Jarrell. They were married on August 27, 1993 and were married for more than 20 years. After living most of their lives in Lincoln Park, Lenny & Barb moved to their beautiful U.P., starting the most wonderful years of their lives. Both enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cards and games with friends, traveling and concerts at the Island Casino. Such was their love and devotion to each other that you could rarely see one without the other. Friends and family often commented that Lenny & Barb were “Joined at the hip”. With her passing, his grieving process is monumental, ongoing, and prayers for Lenny to heal; and Barbara; to thank our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ for accepting and welcoming her soul into paradise on 05/17/14 would be greatly appreciated.

In recent months Barbara enjoyed her granddaughter Gaberial, her grand-cat Taj and her grand-puppy Vegas, also known as “Grammas Girl”. Morning and evening calls with sister Marleen was a regular ritual for Barb. Aunt Barb was also a favorite to her nieces and nephews.

Barbara possessed a wide variety of interests. She was an avid sports fan of the Detroit Tigers, a long suffering fan of the Detroit Lions, and the Michigan Wolverines, “Go Blue”! WIth an amazing talent for crocheting, Barbara made beautiful afghans, Christmas tree skirts, and blankets for appreciative family members, friends and numerous babies. Barb and Lenny shared a love and devotion to Jesus Christ and accepted him as their Lord and Savior. This was an important and fulfilling part of both their lives.

Barbara is survived by her husband Lenny, daughter Mary Eileen Hayes (Kreacto), granddaughter Gaberial Hayes, Leonard P. Jarrell (Julia), sister Marleen Raboin, brothers Robert and Bill Durham, and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers James C. Durham a Marine killed in Vietnam, and David Durham.

A special heart felt thanks to our best friend Rod Prodell who relieved me and my bride of the stress and worry over our U.P. home with TLC during our 11 month absence. We love you “Rodders.” And to our daughter Mary, who gave us a home away from home making this last cancer fight possible; and to our “adopted” extended Lupa family, thank you for the years of memories, the good times, and the laughter.
