Redmen settle for split on diamond

GLADSTONE – A 12-4 loss in the second game of a doubleheader against host Gladstone Friday left the Marquette Senior High School baseball team with a split.

The Redmen took the opener, 3-2.

Gladstone scored four runs in the first inning of the nightcap, then put the game away with four in the fourth and three in the fifth.

“We made some uncharacteristic plays on defense to start and dug too deep a hole,” MSHS coach Todd Koski said after his team had fallen to 14-7 on the season.

“But I’m proud of the kids’ effort today.”

Gabe Apple hit a homer and knocked in two runs for the Redmen.

For the Braves, Hunter Garling recorded three hits and knocked in four runs. Christian Groleau plated two runs.

Sam Pouliot took the mound win; Garrett Finkbeiner shouldered the loss.

In the first game, Brandon Lotterman belted a three-run homer in the second inning to lead MSHS.

Jay Oberg scattered six hits in a complete game performance for the Redmen. He walked three and struck out four.

“He pitched a phenomenal game,” Koski said. “We were also solid defensively, with no errors. When we do that, we win games.”

Garling was tagged with the loss.
