Police step-up patrols for holiday weekend
LANSING (AP) – Michigan State Police and other law enforcers are offering a carrot and a stick for people to wear seat belts, drive with care and stay sober behind the wheel this Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The carrot is increasing the safety of travel over the holiday that marks the unofficial start of the summer recreation season. The stick is the risk of getting an expensive ticket or a visit to jail for drunken driving or failure to follow traffic laws.
The holiday weekend official runs from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Mondayt. State police said 15 people died in Michigan crashes during last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
Troopers will be implementing Operation Care, a nationwide effort that focuses on aggressive and impaired driving and failure to use occupant restraints.
