Helvi M. Jennings
NEGAUNEE, MI. – Helvi Marie Jennings, 89, of 511 Cherry St., Negaunee, died at 4:30 am on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had been a resident since September, 2013.
Helvi was born May 24, 1924 in Negaunee to David and Ida (Romo) Pynnonen, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1941, and was a lifelong Negaunee resident. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and worked as a registered nurse for Bell Memorial Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Dr. Narotzky and Dr. Paine, and retired from Morgan Heights Sanitarium in 1973.
Mrs. Jennings was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church, Negaunee and the United Methodist Women. In earlier years, she and her husband enjoyed trailering and camping, spending summers on the Menominee River in Iron Mountain at the River’s Bend Campground. They spent winters in Gulf Shores, AL. In her free time, Helvi enjoyed knitting, baking, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan (Robert) Veale of Negaunee; daughter-in-law, Diane Jennings; 3 grandchildren: Heather (Greg) Toutant, Robert Alger Veale and Marcus Emery Jennings; 2 great-grandchildren, Faith and Preston Toutant; 2 brothers, Robert and Leino Pynnonen, both of Negaunee; 2 sisters, Hilma VanEerden and Betty Ann Schneider, both of Marquette; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helvi was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 67 years, Alger Emery Jennings on April 10, 2014; son, Ronald Jennings; 2 infant grandsons, Christian and Jonathon; 3 sisters: Toini Williams, Vilma Hakkarainen and Edna Kirkpatrick; and 2 brothers: Reino and Taito Pynnonen.
Memorial Services will be held at 5:00 pm on Friday, May 23rd at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Lindenberg officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 pm until the time of services at 5:00 pm at the church on Friday, and also at a reception in the church hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Mitchell United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in Helvi’s memory.
