Sidney T. ‘Yut’ Holman

PALMER, MI. – Sidney T. Holman, 83, of 401 Kirkpatrick St., Palmer, went to be with his beloved wife, Mary, at 11:05 pm on Tuesday, May 13, 2015 at Marquette General Hospital.

Sidney was born October 30, 1930 in Negaunee to Joseph and Louisa (Leverton) Holman, Sr. Mr. Holman enlisted in the United States Army in 1948 and proudly served during the Korean War, earning a Bronze Star. Following his service to his county he returned to Negaunee where he worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as an underground miner at the Mather B and Tracy Mines. Mr. Holman then finished his education in 1968, earning his diploma from the Negaunee High School night program. He then proudly continued his education at Northern Michigan University earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work in 1973. Sidney went on to become a Probation Officer for Marquette County, and was very proud of being able to help countless people better themselves, many of whom would go on to thank him personally for all he did to help them.

Mr. Holman was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, as well as VA Romo Post #3165, Negaunee VFW and the Negaunee Elks. He was an avid runner, and was known to be very generous in giving out his homemade maple syrup. Sidney enjoyed time spent outdoors, hiking, hunting, fishing, attending gatherings with his friends from the Tracy Mine, and was proud to be a volunteer for RSVP. Most of all he enjoyed time spent with his family.

Surviving are 3 sons: Roger (Joette) Holman and Brad Holman, both of Palmer, and Bryan (Jodi) Holman of Northland; 1 daughter, Becky (Steve) Dale of Negaunee; 6 grandchildren: Nichole (Bill) Munson, Heather (Brett) Sandstrom, John (Cindy) Holman, Colette (Jason) Vallee, Alexis (John Meyer) Holman, and Mike (Amy Day) Dale; 6 great- grandchildren: Alex, Malorie, Camryn, Cailey, Christina, and Victoria; 3 brothers: Merton, Milton, and Robert Holman; 2 sisters: Millicent McCuen and Mabel Johnson; 2 sisters-in-law: Nora Holman and Helen Marsh; brother-in-law, Robert Thompson; as well several nieces, nephews, and friends. Sidney was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, on June 20, 2011; 3 brothers: Joseph Jr., Gordon, and Arthur Holman; 2 sisters: Evelyn Robar and Muriel Willey; 6 sisters-in-law: Charlotte, Florence, Shirley, and Jen Holman, Dorothy Sokolowski, and Bernice Alexander; and 4 brothers-in-law: Mac McCuen, Bert Johnson, Chet Willey, and Jackie Robar.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00pm on Tuesday, May 20 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:30am until the time of Mass at 1:00pm at the church on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be directed in Sidney’s memory to the Negaunee Senior Center, at 410 Jackson St., Negaunee, MI 49866.
