Northern Michigan hosting Fuel U.P. the Dome on Saturday at Superior Dome
MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome will be hosting Fuel U.P. in the Dome from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday as part of the NFL Play 60 program.
The event that focuses on nutrition, exercise and learning how to make the right choices to fuel bodies will feature 400 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from the Upper Peninsula who will work with former Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, as well as coaches and athletes from both Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech University.
Invitations were sent out to U.P. school districts, who chose students to participate in the event. Pre-registration is required to attend and those who were invited are being asked to arrive early for the healthy snacks from 9-9:30 a.m. T-shirts, cinch sacks, and wrist bands with information inside will be given to each participant of the program and pictures and autographs of the players will also be available.
The event is sponsored by Jilbert’s Dairy, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan and the National Dairy Council. Jilbert Dairy sales manager Gordon Mielke organized the event after witnessing a similar event at Ford Field in Detroit in 2012.
“Out of about 200 students there, only five or 10 were from the U.P.,” Mielke said. “It always seems like we get the short end of the stick.
“So I thought, ‘Why not hold one here?'”
Former Detroit Lions Luther Elliss and Lomas Brown are scheduled to attend the event. Ellis and Brown will also be at the Up North Lodge in Gwinn from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Saturday to meet the public with donations being made to the Sawyer Care Clinic.
