Prep golf: Manistique sweeps at Munising Triangular

MUNISING – Alex Anderson and Hailey Hoholik earned medalist honors to lead their Manistique teams to victory at the Munising Triangular high school golf meet held at Pictured Rocks Golf Club on Tuesday.

Anderson shot 41 to beat out teammate D.K. Boyd III by three strokes for low score on the boys side, while Hoholik carded 50 to outperform a pair of Munising athletes by a half-dozen shots.

The Emeralds won a narrow four-stroke victory over Munising in the girls team race, 240-244, while Manistique had a much more comfortable 32-stroke margin in the boys race, 177 to 209 for the host Mustangs. Gwinn, which doesn’t have a girls team this season, shot 276 on the boys side.

Four girls joined Hoholik in breaking 60 despite miserable 42-degree temperatures – Munising freshman Marissa Immel and senior teammate Megan Murray each carded 56, while Manistique’s Maggie Morrison shot 58 and Lexi Carlson 59.

“Marissa did well and we’re improving as we have a very young girls group,” Mustangs coach Bette Immel said.

Among the boys, the Emeralds’ Louis Berry III and Munising junior Izaak Mahoski each shot 45 to finish a stroke behind Boyd, while Manistique rounded out an all-40s scorecard as Zach Powers carded 47.

Gwinn was paced by sophomore Christian Thiel with 53 while Munising freshman Kyle Welters and sophomore Quintin Tarasan accumulated 54s.

“Our scores were higher than usual, but we have a couple of our good golfers (Tyler Tweedale and Colin Immel) trying to deal with illness and injury.”

All three schools, along with numerous others from around the Upper Peninsula, return to Pictured Rocks on Friday morning for the Munising Invitational.

Munising travels to the Central U.P./Skyline meet at George Young Golf Club in Gaastra on Monday.
