Prep tennis: Negaunee’s Syrjala wins title in Kingsford

MARQUETTE – Ryan Syrjala won an individual title, but it wasn’t enough to give the Negaunee High School boys tennis team the Kingsford Invitational championship on Saturday.

Syrjala captured the No. 2 singles crown by defeating Brady Hicks in the finals, 6-1, 6-3.

But the Miners of head coach Kyle Saari placed third behind winner Menominee (20) and runner-up Kingsford (18). West Iron County (9) finished fourth, followed by Escanaba (5) and Iron Mountain (4).

The only other NHS netter to make the championship round was Eric Hurst at No. 3 singles. He dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to Chris Roell of Kingsford.
