Prep softball: Marquette goes 1-2 in Merrill, Wisconsin

MARQUETTE – A trip to Merrill, Wisconsin on Saturday saw the Marquette Senior High School girls softball team go 1-2 in round-robin tournament play.

In the first game, the Redettes dropped a 3-2 decision to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, though Jillian Frye went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

MSHS starting pitcher Senja Liimatta took the loss. She allowed six hits and four walks while fanning 10.

MSHS won its second game, 22-0 in five innings, over Crandon, Wisconsin. Dana Paquet led the way with three hits, five RBIs and two runs.

Emilee Lamora added two hits, an RBI and four runs, while Courtney Finkbeiner turned in two hits and four runs scored.

Hurler Chelsea Wiggins gave up but one hit and a walk while striking out nine.

In their final game, the Redettes (7-9) fell to Merrill, 5-3, though Finkbeiner and Amanda Gray posted two hits and a run scored apiece.

Liimatta shouldered the loss, allowing three hits and four walks while fanning five.

“I was disappointed with the (Rhinelander) loss,” MSHS head coach Paul Seibert said, “but we played well the last two games. I was happy with the way we played.”
