Virginia M. Baker

HARVEY, MI. – Virginia Mildred Baker, age 91, of Harvey, entered eternal life Thursday morning, May 8, 2014, at the Norlite Nursing Center, in the loving, comforting care of her family and the staff of Norlite.

Born March 19, 1923 in Detroit, a daughter of Olie and Gladys (Duchane) Martin, Virginia was raised in Detroit and West Branch. She came to the Marquette area in 1964 and worked for over 17 years as a bookkeeper with Montgomery Ward until the store’s closure. She also assisted her husband as a bookkeeper for his business and was employed as a housekeeper until the early 1990’s when she retired.

As a homemaker, Virginia enjoyed household duties, canning, knitting, crocheting, and sewing, making all her children’s clothing while they were young. She enjoyed watching NASCAR and NHRA with Funny Car drag race champion, John Force, being a favorite driver. Virginia was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Carol M. Emmons of Lansing and Peggy A. (Gary) Narhi of Marquette; sons, Andrew B. Baker II of Kinross and Chester E. Baker of Harvey; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grand- children, and 5 great great-grandchildren; her brother, Ronald Martin of Whittemore; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth G. Baker and Merlin H. Baker, Jr; sisters, Ethel, Martha, and Florence; and brothers, Melvin, Donald, and Howard.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey on Thursday, May 15, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon Thursday with Rev. Ben Paris, pastor, as celebrant. A reception will follow in Fr. Gauthier Hall. Inurnment will be made in the Grotto of the Good Shepherd at Park Cemetery.
