Prep girls soccer: Marquette wins Alpena Sunrise Side Challenge Cup

ALPENA – A 7-0 win over Boyne City clinched the Alpena Sunrise Side Challenge Cup championship Saturday for the Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team.

The Redettes of head coach Dan LeBert, now 10-1 on the season, also beat Clarkston (2-0) and Alpena (4-0) in the four-team tourney.

“The girls played well,” LeBert said. “Ball control was the key. We moved the ball around and spaced the field well.

“We kept the (teams we played) on their heels. We probably possessed the ball 60-70 percent of the time. That’s usually a good recipe for a win.”

Against Boyne City, the Redettes broke open a one-goal game at the half with six markers in the second half.

Casey Durand and Sierra Carlson scored two goals each, with Sydney Higgins and Terese Ledy adding single markers. Marquette also got a goal when a Boyne city defender knocked the ball into the net on a corner kick.

Recording assists were Deni Peterson (2), Gabrielle Gencheff, Ledy, Kayce Mullett and Madison Rieboldt.

Molly Gaudreau and Karly Cushway each played a half in goal for MSHS. They each made a save.

Against Alpena, Carleigh Hillier, Peterson, Mullett and Durand notched markers, with Mikayla Blight (2), Rieboldt and Ledy drawing assists.

Gaudreau made six saves in goal.

MSHS got two goals from Shelby Ross against Clarkston, one assisted by Durand and the other with help from Makaela Burse.

Gaudreau made seven stops in goal.

“Clarkson is a good team,” LeBert said. “They gave us some good competition.”
