Dr. Robert D. Gibson

NEWBERRY, MI. – Dr. Robert D. Gibson, 75, a longtime Newberry resident and retired local physician, died unexpectedly at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

He was born on July 28, 1938 in Detroit and raised in Newberry. He was the son of the late Dr. Robert E.L. & Marian R. (Cleary) Gibson.

Dr. Gibson graduated from Newberry High School in the class of 1956 and completed his undergraduate work at University of Michigan. He graduated medical school from Wayne State University in 1963. Dr. Gibson entered the military and served his country overseas in Korea as Captain in the United States Army. Upon his return, he completed his residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital in general surgery.

Dr. Gibson returned to Newberry to work with his father and began a practice that spanned over 30 years. He was a dedicated, tireless, advocate for rural health care in our community.

He retired from private practice in 1993 and became the director of the Gibson Family Clinic Walk-In at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital serving in that capacity until he retired in 1996. During his career he held many positions on the board of directors for Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. Dr. Gibson was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Family Practice and a fellow at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

Survivors include his wife of over 48 years, Bonnie of Newberry; daughters Judge Beth Gibson, of Newberry and Rebecca Gibson of Minneapolis; grandson Robert of Newberry; his step mother Elsie Gibson of Newberry; and 1 brother James (Diane) Gibson of Oshkosh and 2 nephews.

Dr. Gibson was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Gregory Catholic Church on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 11:00 am with Pastor Nancy Barket of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
