George M. Olds
ISHPEMING, MI. – George M. Olds, middle son of Joseph and Hilda Olds, born September 16, 1919 in Ishpeming, MI died April 30, 2014 in Lansing, MI at the age of 94.
George was an athlete and his legendary 1936 Ishpeming High School football team went undefeated and unscored upon. He graduated from the University of Michigan (Chemistry). While in Ann Arbor, he met and married Patricia “the prettiest girl.” George enjoyed a long retirement from the Board of Water & Light. He was a founding member of Christ United Methodist Church, lifetime member of the local rock club (CML&MS), talented sculptor/artist, published poet and inventor with patented lab equipment.
George was predeceased by his wife, Patricia and brother J. Wesley Olds.
He is survived by his brother Allan J. Olds (Verna), son George D. Olds (Dagmar) and daughters Barbara L. Vermurlen and Joanne “Jodee” M. Melse (John), grandsons George “Zig” J. Olds, Ryan M. Smith (Amanda Hanson and daughter Kiera), Robert C. Vermurlen (Alina), Bradley J. Vermurlen (Alexandra), great granddaughter Madilyn Grace Smith and special friends Halina Marek, Tom Cathey and Rick Vermurlen.
Funeral service with visitation one hour prior, Tuesday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Christ United Methodist Church or Ishpeming High School Sport Booster Club.
George and his bride will return to his boyhood home with interment in the Ishpeming City Cemetery.
