Two downstate teens arraigned on damage charges
MARQUETTE – Two downstate teens have been arraigned on malicious destruction of property charges, accused of causing thousands of dollars of damage to homes and a vehicle last month on Marquette’s east side.
Mitchell James Skiba, 19, of Alpena and Logan Charles Beach, 19, of Presque Isle were recently arraigned in Marquette County District Court, according to the Marquette City Police Department.
Skiba is charged with four felony counts of malicious destruction of property and four misdemeanors of malicious destruction of personal property and damage to a building.
Beach is charged with two felony counts of malicious destruction of a building with two misdemeanors of malicious destruction of personal property.
Police said Skiba was released from custody after posting 10 percent of a $55,000 bond. Beach remained lodged in the Marquette County Jail this morning.
The alleged incidents occurred on April 14, police said in a news release. At about 3 a.m., Marquette city police responded to a call in the 800 block of North Front Street on a report of a chair having been thrown through the window of a residence.
Investigating officers found that damage and additional damage to more than 10 homes and one vehicle on the city’s east side. Police searched the area and found three male subjects who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. At that time, evidence was collected from the suspects and they were issued minor in possession tickets, police said.
Later in the investigation, the collected evidence was used to confirm the investigating officers’ suspicion the suspects were allegedly responsible for the damage, police said.
With the assistance of Northern Michigan University Public Safety officers, Marquette police gathered the necessary evidence and interviews to submit a report for review by the Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Arrest warrants were later issued for Skiba and Beach.
