Prep boys tennis: Trio of singles victories not enough for Marquette

MARINETTE, Wis. – Menominee pulled off a sweep in doubles to overcome three victories by Marquette in singles for a 5-3 victory in a high school boys tennis match held indoors at the Marinette, Wis., Civic Center on Thursday.

The Maroons won as the rain fell outside despite being shorthanded, according to their coach.

“Marquette always has one of the best teams in the U.P. and I was a little concerned coming in missing three players,” Menominee’s Troy Reuter told the Marinette Eagle-Herald. “But the guys stepped in and stepped up and played great.”

The Redmen got their wins in straight sets. At No. 1 singles, junior Josh Downs defeated Davey Luplow, 6-2, 6-1; at No. 2, senior Matt Collins dispatched Nate Anttila, 6-1, 6-2; and at No. 3, junior Noah Gannon slipped past Nathan Nowack, 7-5, 6-4.

In the other five flights, MSHS managed to win just 10 games, the best coming out of Marquette’s No. 1 doubles team of Mike Mlsna and Mike Wiitala, who fell 6-0, 6-4 to Ryan Woods and Caleb Kleiman of Menominee.

“Our doubles depth showed today,” Reuter said. “We have about 10 players battling for the final three varsity spots. They compete hard against each other. Many of these players end up playing JV matches even though they would be varsity on a lot of other teams in the U.P.”

Marquette hosts Munising at 3:30 p.m. today, while the Maroons’ next match is also against Munising at home Monday afternoon.
