Pre boys basketball: Westwood has eight candidates for varsity head coach

ISHPEMING – Westwood High School officials hope to hire a varsity boys basketball coach by the middle of this month, WHS Athletic Director Jon Beckman said.

“The job posting ended (Wednesday),” he said. “We have eight candidates – two within our school district – and we’ll be going through the resumes of all the people who applied.”

Beckman said the list will be whittled down for further consideration, “but we’ll interview at least four.”

Those interviews will be conducted over the next couple of weeks, with the mid-month final decision eyed.

WHS is replacing Ryan Reichel, who resigned in March after posting a 5-14 record this past season and a 14-47 mark over his three years at the Patriots’ helm.

Beckman said the school is looking for some coaching experience for the open position.

“But that’s not the most important factor,” he said. “We’re looking for the best fit, someone who puts the athletes first and will adapt to whatever talent there is.”

Beckman said it would help if the eventual hiree has played basketball, but it’s not necessary.

“We need someone who’s a good teacher (of the game) and a good communicator,” he said.

“We want a communicator with the athletes, parents, administration and media.”
